1 Aban 1404

Quatrain 60 of 75

“And strange to tell, among that Earthen Lot

Some could articulate, while others not:

And suddenly one more impatient cried—

"Who is the Potter, pray, and who the Pot?"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

And suddenly one more impatient cried — the autumn version of this crying is different from the spring version. In autumn the impatience is not the impatience of the newly formed wanting to know its terms. It is the impatience of the long-formed wanting to know if the terms were fair. Who is the Potter, pray, and who the Pot? In autumn this resolves into something closer to Khayyam's argument with fate.

Among the earthen lot — in autumn the lot is smaller than it was. The ones who are still speaking are the ones still asking the question.
