3 Aban 1404

Quatrain 62 of 75

“Another said—"Why, ne'er a peevish Boy

Would break the Bowl from which he drank in Joy;

Shall He that made the Vessel in pure Love

And Fansy, in an after Rage destroy!"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

By autumn the bowl that was made in pure Love and Fancy has done its work. The summer joy was real. The drinking was real. And the question — shall He destroy in after-rage? — becomes more pressing as the season turns. Why, ne'er a peevish boy would break the bowl he drank from in joy — this observation becomes more poignant in autumn. The joy is fading.

Khayyam records this argument with respect. The pots in the shop are all making their various cases. None of them can hear each other's arguments. All of them are waiting for the same thing.
