15 Azar 1404

Quatrain 29 of 75

“Into this Universe, and why not knowing,

Nor whence, like Water willy-nilly flowing:

And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,

I know not whither, willy-nilly blowing.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

In autumn the willy-nilly of blowing out becomes more audible. The universe is doing what it does: the summer is departing, taking with it some of what was most vivid. You did not choose to be in this autumn. You are here because the water that arrived in your particular spring has flowed to this particular place. Like Wind along the Waste — this is the autumn wind exactly, blowing over what has been harvested and left bare, carrying the seeds of what comes next in its irresponsible course.

The waste over which the wind blows is not ruined — it is the land after harvest, temporarily empty, full of next year's potential.
