19 Dey 1404

Quatrain 62 of 75

“Another said—"Why, ne'er a peevish Boy

Would break the Bowl from which he drank in Joy;

Shall He that made the Vessel in pure Love

And Fansy, in an after Rage destroy!"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

In pure Love and Fancy — in winter the Love is remembered more than felt, the Fancy is the winter imagination working on what was real in spring. But the argument holds, even in winter. A good craftsman does not destroy his finest work in a fit of temper. Shall He — the one who made everything — be measured against the worst human impulse?

Khayyam's winter vessel makes this argument from the bottom of its winter shelf: I was made in love. I was used in joy. I have been full and empty and full again. Whatever comes next — surely not the rage of an after-thought.
