28 Dey 1404

Quatrain 71 of 75

“And when Thyself with shining Foot shall pass

Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,

And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot

Where I made one—turn down an empty Glass!”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

The shining foot that passes among the guests star-scattered on the grass is the winter visitor, the one who comes to the feast after the summer has gone. And in thy joyous Errand reach the spot where I made one — turn down an empty glass. In winter this instruction has its full weight. The spots where the departed made one are many now.

Khayyam's final request is this: do not forget where I was at the feast. Pass the spot. Acknowledge it. Turn down a glass. The feast continues. I was at it. I was one of the star-scattered guests on the grass. Remember that, when you pass through.
