13 Bahman 1404

Quatrain 11 of 75

“Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,

A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse—and Thou

Beside me singing in the Wilderness—

And Wilderness is Paradise enow.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

In winter this verse is held as a memory and a promise. The bough is bare, the ground is cold, and the wilderness outside has shed its paradise aspect for its other face — austere, empty, honest. But the four things are still possible: bread, wine, a book of verse, and the person.

Khayyam does not specify that the bough must have leaves. He does not say the wilderness must be warm. He says: these four things and this person, and wherever you are becomes enough. A winter room with a good fire is a wilderness of a different kind — interior, confined, complete. Paradise is not a place or a season. It is a proportion — four simple things in the right combination, with the right person. You can make this in winter. Khayyam made it everywhere.
