“And we, that now make merry in the Room
They left, and Summer dresses in new Bloom,
Ourselves must we beneath the Couch of Earth
Descend, ourselves to make a Couch—for whom?”
Reflection · Winter 1404
The descent is most visible in winter. The couch of earth is frozen and present — the ground that will receive everything, patient under the frost. The room that we have been making merry in is going cold and quiet. For whom? In winter the question is haunting and beautiful in equal measure. The someone for whom you descend is a pure future — not yet born, not yet imaginable, requiring only that you become good ground.
Winter is preparation for the becoming. Everything in the garden right now is becoming better ground for the spring that someone, somewhere in the future, will make merry in. You are part of this. We all are.
