“What, without asking, hither hurried Whence?
And, without asking, Whither hurried hence!
Another and another Cup to drown
The Memory of this Impertinence!”
Reflection · Winter 1404
In winter the impertinence lands with its full weight. Hurried hither, hurried hence — the winter version of this is feeling the hence beginning to pull, the way the year is pulling toward its end. Another and another Cup. In winter the cups are fewer and the drowning more deliberate. Not oblivion — Khayyam is never asking for oblivion. Just enough to stand in right relationship with the cosmic rudeness: with amusement, with defiance, with the cup raised to the universe that threw you here and will throw you out again without your opinion being sought.
This is Khayyam's final posture: not submission, not rage, but the dignity of someone who knows the game is rigged and plays it beautifully anyway.
