22 Esfand 1404

Quatrain 49 of 75

“'Tis all a Chequer-board of Nights and Days

Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays:

Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays,

And one by one back in the Closet lays.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

In winter the Chequer-board is approaching endgame. The pieces are fewer, the squares more important, the moves of Destiny more legible in their pattern. One by one back in the Closet lays — winter is when this line has its full force. The ones who were on the board in spring are not all on it in winter.

The piece that remains is you, winter piece, still on the board, still being moved hither and thither by the hand you cannot see. The closet is close. The hand will reach for you when it reaches. Until then: you are on the board. You are in play. The game is still happening. This is the most you can say, and it is enough.
