26 Farvardin 1405

Quatrain 22 of 75

“And we, that now make merry in the Room

They left, and Summer dresses in new Bloom,

Ourselves must we beneath the Couch of Earth

Descend, ourselves to make a Couch—for whom?”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

In spring the room is already being made merry in — Nowruz and its celebrations, the family tables, the Sizdah Bedar in the fields. We are in the room they left. This is important: we inherited this spring from everyone who celebrated it before us. Their making merry prepared the room for ours. And we will leave the room for whom? Some Farvardin a hundred years from now, people we will never know will make merry in the room we leave.

This is not sad. This is the structure of human time, and it is full of an accidental generosity. The merry-making is real and right and we received it from the ones who came before and we will pass it to the ones who come after.
