31 Farvardin 1405

Quatrain 27 of 75

“Myself when young did eagerly frequent

Doctor and Saint, and heard great Argument

About it and about: but evermore

Came out by the same Door as in I went.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

The eagerness of youth — this is spring. Every spring is a version of this young Khayyam, going out to find the answer, certain that this year the door will lead somewhere new. Come out by the same door as in you went — spring's version of this is the way the year starts with promises and ends with the same essential self that began it. The argument about the New Year, what it will bring, how this year will be different — the door you come out of in Esfand is the same door you entered in Farvardin.

This is not defeat. It is identity — the confirmation that you are consistently yourself through all the seasons of inquiry. The same door is your own door, your specific door, the one that is yours and has always been yours.
