10 Khordad 1405

Quatrain 66 of 75

“So, while the Vessels one by one were speaking,

One spied the little Crescent all were seeking:

And then they jogg'd each other, "Brother! Brother!

Hark to the Porter's Shoulder-knot a-creaking!"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

The little Crescent all were seeking — the new moon that marks the end of Ramazan and the beginning of the feast, the thin sliver of light that signals the resumption of all that was deferred. In spring the crescent is Nowruz itself, the thin light returning. Brother! Brother! — the jogging of each other, the urgency passing from pot to pot through the row. This is what community is for.

Hark to the Porter's Shoulder-knot a-creaking! — the juice is on its way. The oblivion is ending. Spring is the creak of the Porter's knot, the sound of abundance arriving.
