15 Khordad 1405

Quatrain 71 of 75

“And when Thyself with shining Foot shall pass

Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,

And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot

Where I made one—turn down an empty Glass!”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

Among the guests star-scattered on the grass — the feast of existence, the gathering of all the living under the open sky. The guests are as numerous as stars; they have come to this grass from before memory and will continue after you. You are one of them, briefly. In spring this verse is read as a future so distant it feels abstract. When you yourself are gone and the ones you love are still at the feast — reach the spot where I made one, turn down an empty glass.

This is the most intimate instruction in the Rubaiyat. Remember me, when I am gone from the feast.
