“There was a Door to which I found no Key:
There was a Veil past which I could not see:
Some little Talk awhile of ME and THEE
There seemed—and then no more of THEE and ME.”
Reflection · Summer 1405
The Door and the Veil in summer are veiled themselves — the summer abundance covers them, the brightness makes the dark places seem less present. But Khayyam stood before them in every season and found them equally locked and equally opaque. Some little Talk awhile — this is summer's gift in its purest form. The conversation on the long evening, the exchange between ME and THEE, the temporary and real connection between two people who are each eventually going to be the THEE that is no more.
Be in the talk while it is happening. You are not before the door right now. You are in the conversation. Both ME and THEE are here. Make the most of the little while of talking.
