17 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 59 of 75

“Listen again. One Evening at the Close

Of Ramazan, ere the better Moon arose,

In that old Potter's Shop I stood alone

With the clay Population round in Rows.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the potter's shop is full of activity — the wheel turning, the clay being worked, the population growing. The evening close of Ramazan is the threshold moment before abundance is released. The clay population in summer rows is at its most eloquent: vessels made for use, for holding the summer's wine and water.

Standing alone among them at dusk: what do you hear? The potter's shop is quiet at the close of the day. Khayyam listens. The clay has something to say.
