31 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 73 of 75

“Strange, is it not? that of the myriads who

Before us pass'd the door of Darkness through,

Not one returns to tell us of the Road,

Which to discover we must travel too.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

Strange, is it not? In summer the strangeness is almost swallowed by the abundance — so much returning happens in summer that the one great non-returning is harder to notice. But it is there. Of the myriads who before us pass'd the Door of Darkness through — the millions who have lived and died, who passed through the very same summer fields you are standing in, who felt the same summer warmth you are feeling now.

Not one returns to tell us of the Road which to discover we must travel too — in summer this is background music. Present but not dominant.
