“Now the New Year reviving old Desires,
The thoughtful Soul to Solitude retires,
Where the WHITE HAND OF MOSES on the Bough
Puts out, and Jesus from the Ground suspires.”
Reflection · Summer 1405
Read this in summer and feel what it is like to be on the other side of what spring promised. The old desires that revived in Farvardin — where are they now? Some fulfilled. Some abandoned. Some quietly transformed into something else during the long heat of Tir and Mordad, the way fruit transforms on the vine without announcing the change.
The thoughtful soul retires to solitude in summer not in grief, but in the original sense: to look at the thing clearly, away from noise. Khayyam is inviting you to retire from the busyness of summer and notice what actually revived in you this year. Not what you planned to revive. What actually came back, unbidden, like sap in the vine that was bare through Dey and Bahman and is now heavy with leaf and fruit in Mordad.
