31 Shahrivar 1405

Quatrain 29 of 75

“Into this Universe, and why not knowing,

Nor whence, like Water willy-nilly flowing:

And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,

I know not whither, willy-nilly blowing.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the willy-nilly feels like freedom — the summer wind blowing where it will, the summer water rushing downstream without consultation. Into this universe, and why not knowing — the summer version of this is the full present-tense commitment to being here without requiring an explanation. Why are you here? Summer says: you are here, the wine is cold, the evening is long, the company is good. The why is academic.

The wind along the waste in summer is not cold and driving; it is the hot wind from the east, the Tir wind, the one that dries things out and makes the grapes sweet. The willy-nilly, for now, has brought you to a good place.
