3 Mehr 1405

Quatrain 32 of 75

“There was a Door to which I found no Key:

There was a Veil past which I could not see:

Some little Talk awhile of ME and THEE

There seemed—and then no more of THEE and ME.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1405

The Door and the Veil in autumn are most visible — autumn strips away the summer covering and there they are, the locked door and the opaque veil, exactly where Khayyam found them. Some little Talk awhile of ME and THEE — in autumn you know that it is a little while, that the talking has a specific duration. This knowledge is autumn's specific gift: not the sadness of it but the sharpening, the attention that finitude creates.

Khayyam does not tell you how to unlock the door. He never figured it out. He does tell you, by implication, what matters: the little Talk, the ME and THEE while they are both here. Before the no more.
