11 Mehr 1405

Quatrain 40 of 75

“You know, my Friends, with what a brave Carouse

I made a Second Marriage in my house:

Divorced old barren Reason from my Bed,

And took the Daughter of the Vine to Spouse.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1405

The marriage in autumn enters its more complex phase. The Daughter of the Vine is being pressed — the harvest is in, the grapes are at the vat, and the season is turning from the exuberant phase of the relationship to its richer, deeper register. Old barren Reason sometimes knocks at the door in autumn — the season's reckoning invites her back. Khayyam does not let her back in.

He was honest about her name: Daughter of the Vine. The vine is also impermanent, also seasonal. The marriage is good and real. It is also bounded. This is not a flaw. It is the nature of all marriages with the living and beautiful.
