“And lately, by the Tavern Door agape,
Came stealing through the Dusk an Angel Shape,
Bearing a vessel on his Shoulder; and
He bid me taste of it; and 'twas—the Grape!”
Reflection · Autumn 1405
The autumn dusk is the most angelic dusk — longer than summer's but arriving earlier, the light going amber and then the kind of dark that is more purple than black. The Tavern Door agape in autumn invites everything that has been ripened by the year. The Angel Shape in autumn carries a different vessel — the autumn harvest wine, the first pressing of what the summer grew, complex and full of something that the spring wine was not.
'Twas the Grape — as it always was, as it will always be. The angel of the autumn dusk is bringing you what the spring promised and the summer fulfilled and the autumn pressed. The vessel is heavy with the year. Taste it.
