“Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried,
Asking, "What Lamp had Destiny to guide
Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"
And—"A blind understanding!" Heav'n replied.”
Reflection · Winter
A blind understanding. This is the answer Heaven gives to the question of what lamp Destiny provides for its little children stumbling in the dark. Not a lamp that is small or dim — an understanding that cannot see. The lamp that guides us is itself blind. Khayyam asked. He actually asked — went to the rolling heaven itself and cried the question. This is the astronomer speaking: I know this sky, I have navigated it, I have reduced it to mathematics more precise than any before mine, and now I am asking it the one question the mathematics cannot answer.
In winter, when stumbling in the dark is most literal, this answer is both devastating and oddly freeing. If the understanding is blind, you are not failing by failing to see clearly. The guide is blind. You are doing exactly what everyone has always done.
