“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”
Reflection · Autumn
The most quoted lines in the Rubaiyat. The Moving Finger writes — present continuous, happening right now, as you read this, as this day passes from future to present to past in the same instant. Having writ, Moves on — the Finger does not pause to review its work. What was written is written.
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it. This is the most devastating and most liberating line. The past is not subject to revision. No grief rewashes the ink. In autumn, with the year's record legible and largely indelible, this is both grief and freedom: you cannot change it. And the Finger is writing the next line. Be in that.
