“With Earth's first Clay They did the Last Man's knead,

And then of the Last Harvest sow'd the Seed:

Yea, the first Morning of Creation wrote

What the Last Dawn of Reckoning shall read.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter

The first Morning of Creation wrote what the Last Dawn of Reckoning shall read — predestination expressed not as theology but as physics. From the first moment, everything that would follow was already implicit in the initial conditions. The clay of the first man contained the clay of the last. This is Khayyam the mathematician speaking — the man who understood that a system fully described at one moment is theoretically calculable at all future moments.

In winter this verse is felt in the bones. The year that began in spring has arrived, through its necessary steps, at this winter. You are part of an unbroken chain that runs from the first morning to the last.
