Quatrain 73 of 75

“Strange, is it not? that of the myriads who

Before us pass'd the door of Darkness through,

Not one returns to tell us of the Road,

Which to discover we must travel too.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter

Strange, is it not? In winter this strangeness is most available. The door of Darkness is visible from the winter window — not as metaphor but as structure. The nights are long. The cold is real. The myriads who passed through before us passed through winter nights like this one, and they did not come back to report.

Not one returns to tell us of the Road — and the winter road outside the window is cold and dark and does not promise to tell you where it goes. Which to discover we must travel too — yes. In winter this too is heaviest. All of us must travel it. None of us will report back.
