14 Aban 1404

Quatrain 73 of 75

“Strange, is it not? that of the myriads who

Before us pass'd the door of Darkness through,

Not one returns to tell us of the Road,

Which to discover we must travel too.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

In autumn the strangeness that Khayyam names is more felt. Strange, is it not? The myriads include everyone who ever experienced an autumn — every person who ever watched the leaves turn and felt the year drawing in. All of them passed through the Door of Darkness. Not one returned. Not one returns to tell us of the Road which to discover we must travel too — in autumn the too is felt more keenly.

The road is undescribed. This is not frightening, exactly — more like standing at a door that everyone has gone through and no one has come back from.
