15 Aban 1404

Quatrain 74 of 75

“I sent my Soul through the Invisible,

Some letter of that After-life to spell:

And after many days my Soul return'd,

And said, "Behold, Myself am Heav'n and Hell."”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

In autumn the soul's report is most legible: myself am Heav'n and Hell. Autumn is the season of both simultaneously — the heaven of the amber light, the harvest completed; and the hell of the letting go, the darkening, the advancing cold. I sent my Soul through the Invisible — and what it found in the deepest investigation of what lies beyond is that the beyond is here. Heaven is not elsewhere. Hell is not elsewhere.

In autumn this is both comfort and challenge. Comfort: the heaven is here, in this amber afternoon. Challenge: so is the hell. And both are yours.
