5 Azar 1404

Quatrain 19 of 75

“And this delightful Herb whose tender Green

Fledges the River's Lip on which we lean—

Ah, lean upon it lightly! for who knows

From what once lovely Lip it springs unseen!”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

The herb is drying back toward the river in autumn, the tender green going gold and then brown at the edges, the lip of the river shrunken as the summer rains have stopped. The leaning is still available but the grass is stiffer. From what once lovely Lip — in autumn you can feel the accumulation of this question. Every year the grass grows from what the previous year gave the ground. Every autumn the grass gives back to the ground what the next spring will grow from.

Lean lightly in autumn because the grass is preparing to become what it will need to be for the next spring. Don't press too hard on a thing that is mid-transformation. Watch it going back. Watch it becoming the loveliness that the next spring's herb will spring from unseen.
