6 Azar 1404

Quatrain 20 of 75

“Ah! my Beloved, fill the Cup that clears

TO-DAY of past Regrets and future Fears—

To-morrow?—Why, To-morrow I may be

Myself with Yesterday's Sev'n Thousand Years.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1404

In autumn this verse inhabits its fullest territory. The past regrets are real now — decisions made in spring and summer that are visible in their consequences. The future fears are concrete — the winter is coming, and after enough winters, the seven thousand years come for everyone. Fill the cup that clears today. Not that numbs or forgets — that clears. There is a difference. Khayyam is not advocating escape from the autumn awareness but the ability to set it aside long enough to be fully in the day that is actually here.

The seven thousand years is closer in autumn — you can feel its gravity more. Khayyam does not ask you to ignore this. He asks you to fill the cup anyway. The awareness of tomorrow makes today more precious, not less.
