4 Bahman 1404

Quatrain 2 of 75

“Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky

I heard a Voice within the Tavern cry,

"Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup

Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

At the left hand of winter's dawn — gray light, cold, the year almost used up — this voice from the tavern is at its most tender and its most serious. My little ones. The cup is not yet dry. But the mathematics are visible now in a way they were not in spring: you can see the level. You can estimate the remainder.

In winter this verse is a small fire. Not demanding you dance or produce some performance of living-fully. Just: the cup is still not dry. There is still something here, in the cold light before the sun has risen. The voice is still calling. You are still, impossibly, here to hear it.
