9 Bahman 1404

Quatrain 7 of 75

“Come, fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring

The Winter Garment of Repentance fling:

The Bird of Time has but a little way

To fly—and Lo! the Bird is on the Wing.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

The Bird of Time in winter is almost at the edge of what you can see. The wing-beat is fainter, the silhouette against the gray sky smaller than it was in Farvardin when it launched. And the Winter Garment of Repentance is back — you are wearing it, because winter is actually the season for reckoning and quiet and honest assessment.

But Khayyam's spring verse heard in winter is a reminder of why you fling the garment in the first place — not to deny winter, but to remember spring. The fire of spring is coming. It is already generating itself, underground, in the chemistry of cold soil and sleeping vine. Keep this verse in winter not as reproach but as promise. The Bird is always on the wing. The fire is never permanently out. The cup is still here.
