22 Bahman 1404

Quatrain 20 of 75

“Ah! my Beloved, fill the Cup that clears

TO-DAY of past Regrets and future Fears—

To-morrow?—Why, To-morrow I may be

Myself with Yesterday's Sev'n Thousand Years.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Winter 1404

To-morrow I may be myself with yesterday's seven thousand years — in winter this is not metaphor. The cold presses the fact of finitude into every hour with specificity that summer manages to blur. The cup that clears today of past regrets and future fears is, in winter, a deliberate and daily act. The regrets of the year are complete now. The fears of next year are visible from here.

Ah, my Beloved — even in winter. Especially in winter. The beloved is most precious when the seven thousand years are audible in the wind outside the window, when tomorrow is genuinely uncertain, when the cup in hand is all that stands between now and the vast time that receives us all. Fill it. Be here. This exact day. This exact cup. This beloved, now.
