7 Ordibehesht 1405

Quatrain 33 of 75

“Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried,

Asking, "What Lamp had Destiny to guide

Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"

And—"A blind understanding!" Heav'n replied.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

In spring the stumbling-in-the-dark quality is less felt but equally true. The spring equinox — which Khayyam helped calculate with extraordinary precision — is itself a balance point in the rolling heaven, the moment when the lamp of Destiny tips toward the light side. And even then: blind understanding. The spring answer is no different from the winter answer: a blind understanding.

The year begins in the same condition it ends — stumbling, guided by something that cannot see. But stumbling in spring has a different quality. The dark is shorter. The stumbling is more energetic. The blind guide has a spring foot.
