18 Ordibehesht 1405

Quatrain 44 of 75

“The mighty Mahmud, the victorious Lord,

That all the misbelieving and black Horde

Of Fears and Sorrows that infest the Soul

Scatters and slays with his enchanted Sword.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

In spring the black Horde is thinner — the long light and warmth reduce the breeding conditions for fears and sorrows. And yet Khayyam's mighty Mahmud is present even in spring. The enchanted Sword in spring is the spring wine itself — not wine as escape but wine as the thing that clears the path ahead, scatters the residual winter fears that didn't fully leave with the cold, slays the sorrows that the new year's light has not yet reached.

Scattered and slain — the spring Horde retreats willingly. It prefers the darkness that winter provides. In spring, the mighty Mahmud barely needs to raise his sword. But he has it. He is there.
