19 Ordibehesht 1405

Quatrain 45 of 75

“But leave the Wise to wrangle, and with me

The Quarrel of the Universe let be:

And, in some corner of the Hubbub coucht,

Make Game of that which makes as much of Thee.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

In spring there is something almost revolutionary about this invitation. Leave the Quarrel of the Universe let be. Come with me to a corner of the Hubbub. Make Game of that which makes as much of Thee — the universe is making a game of you: throwing you into existence without asking, hurrying you out without warning. The appropriate response is to make game of it in return. Not in bitterness — in genuine play.

In spring the Hubbub is most full, the corners most inviting. The universe is playing its spring game with you — blossoming you, warming you, renewing your desires without asking. Play back. Let the spring make its game with you while you make your game with it.
