29 Ordibehesht 1405

Quatrain 55 of 75

“The Vine had struck a Fibre; which about

If clings my Being—let the Sufi flout;

Of my Base Metal may be filed a Key,

That shall unlock the Door he howls without.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring 1405

The Vine striking a Fibre in spring is the vine doing what vines do in Farvardin — sending out the first tendrils, testing every surface, finding the wall that will support the summer's growth. Khayyam's being as the wall that the vine finds is a perfect spring image. Let the Sufi flout his attachment to the present, sensual world. The base metal of his nature — imperfect and real — is exactly the material from which the key can be filed.

The key filed from imperfect material, from the base substance of embodied wine-loving existence, will open the door that more refined methods cannot reach.
