“I tell Thee this—When, starting from the Goal,
Over the shoulders of the flaming Foal
Of Heav'n Parwin and Mushtari they flung,
In my predestin'd Plot of Dust and Soul”
Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859
Reflection · Spring 1405
The flaming Foal of Heaven in spring is at its most visible expression — the sun is strengthening, the days are lengthening. And over its shoulders, Parwin and Mushtari — the Pleiades and Jupiter — the stars of birth and fate, visible in the spring evenings. In my predestined Plot of Dust and Soul — in spring the plot feels like potential rather than fate. The dust is good spring soil; the soul is new.
The spring freedom is also plotted. The Pleiades were flung at birth. The plot is in progress. The spring is part of it.
