12 Tir 1405

Quatrain 23 of 75

“Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend,

Before we too into the Dust Descend;

Dust into Dust, and under Dust, to lie,

Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer and—sans End!”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the peak of what we yet may spend is most visible and most available. The wine is cold and real, the song is happening, the singer is here. Make the most of this. Not frantically — fully. The most is the most completeness, the most presence, the most full-body investment in the act of being alive in this particular summer.

Sans end hangs over the summer with a weight that the season's abundance almost compensates for. You can feel it in the long summer evenings when the light holds until nine and then is gone so quickly — the gone-ness at the end of the bright day is a small practice run for the large gone-ness. Not to darken the day. To illuminate it.
