9 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 51 of 75

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit

Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,

Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

The record of summer is being made in real time, the Finger moving across the long days with particular speed. Having writ, Moves on — summer moves on so fast that the writ barely has time to dry before the next line is being written. Look at what the summer is writing about you: the decisions made, the loves pursued or not pursued, the cups filled or left empty.

Hold summer as what it is: the record being made. Not with anxiety about what is being written but with the desire to be genuinely present in it. Let the summer line say something worth saying.
