14 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 56 of 75

“And this I know: whether the one True Light,

Kindle to Love, or Wrath consume me quite,

One Glimpse of It within the Tavern caught

Better than in the Temple lost outright.”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

The one True Light in summer is at its most literal — the summer sun, the actual light, the source of everything. Kindle to Love, or Wrath consume — the summer doesn't care which interpretation is correct. The glimpse that the summer affords is direct and warm and exactly what it is.

Better than in the Temple lost outright — not because the Temple is wrong but because being lost is worse than glimpsing. A person who glimpses the Light in the Tavern of a summer afternoon has more of the Light than a person who seeks it correctly in the Temple and fails to find it. The glimpse in the present moment is always available.
