15 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 57 of 75

“Oh Thou who didst with Pitfall and with Gin

Beset the Road I was to wander in,

Thou wilt not with Predestination round

Enmesh me, and impute my Fall to Sin?”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer some of the pitfalls have been encountered and the gin has been sprung. The summer makes the verse more specific — the falls are not hypothetical now, they are actual. The predestination round — in summer this phrase has more texture. The round has been going for six months. The mesh was set in the first morning of creation. The summer walking is happening inside it.

Impute my Fall to Sin? — the summer version of this question is real and practical: are the falls of the past six months my fault, or are they the fault of the road? Khayyam argues for the road. Not as an excuse but as an accurate description.
