19 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 61 of 75

“Then said another—"Surely not in vain

My substance from the common Earth was ta'en,

That He who subtly wrought me into Shape

Should stamp me back to common Earth again."”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the pot's argument acquires more urgency — the shape has now been demonstrated, the vessel has done its work. And the question becomes: was this use sufficient? Was the taking and working and using not in vain? He who subtly wrought me into Shape — the subtle craftsmanship of the summer self, the complexity that has developed through the season.

Khayyam allows his pot this argument. It is a good argument in the sense of one that must be made.
