20 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 62 of 75

“Another said—"Why, ne'er a peevish Boy

Would break the Bowl from which he drank in Joy;

Shall He that made the Vessel in pure Love

And Fansy, in an after Rage destroy!"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the bowl from which he drank in joy is the summer's wine, the full cup of the season's abundance. The summer vessel has been used as it was made to be used — the joy has been genuine, the drinking has been real. Made in pure Love and Fancy, in an after Rage destroy — in summer this seems impossible.

Shall He — the conditional is the key. The pot is not making a statement of fact but an appeal to the character of the Maker. Would a loving craftsman destroy in rage what he made with delight? The summer vessel hopes not.
