21 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 63 of 75

“None answer'd this; but after Silence spake

A Vessel of a more ungainly Make:

"They sneer at me for leaning all awry;

What? did the Hand then of the Potter shake?"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the ungainly vessel is doing its work — the awry lean does not prevent it from holding wine, from serving its purpose. The sneering of summer is the sneering of abundance, of the world at its most insistent on its own standards of beauty. None answer'd this — and none answered in summer either. The silence around the ungainly vessel's question is complete.

What? did the Hand then shake? In summer the question burns hotter. The world is most publicly arranged in summer, most insistent on its forms, most likely to sneer at the crooked.
