23 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 65 of 75

“Then said another with a long-drawn Sigh,

"My Clay with long oblivion is gone dry:

But, fill me with the old familiar Juice,

Methinks I might recover by-and-bye!"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the dry clay has been filled — methinks becomes I have. The old familiar juice has done its work, the clay that was dry with long oblivion is now holding what it was made to hold. Recovery has occurred. But the memory of dryness persists. The long sigh that preceded the request for filling — that sigh was real. The long oblivion was real. The summer fullness is richer for having followed the winter emptiness.

The old familiar juice — familiar because it is the same juice that filled this vessel before, that has been filling vessels like this one for as long as vessels and juice have existed together.
