24 Mordad 1405

Quatrain 66 of 75

“So, while the Vessels one by one were speaking,

One spied the little Crescent all were seeking:

And then they jogg'd each other, "Brother! Brother!

Hark to the Porter's Shoulder-knot a-creaking!"”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

In summer the Porter has arrived — the vessel has been filled, the crescent has been sighted and the feast has been running for months. The Shoulder-knot is no longer creaking; it has been unloaded, the wine distributed, the cups active. Brother! Brother! — the jogging has become the celebration itself. The vessels are no longer waiting for the crescent; they are in the middle of what the crescent promised.

The summer is the fulfilled crescent.
