4 Shahrivar 1405

Quatrain 2 of 75

“Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky

I heard a Voice within the Tavern cry,

"Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup

Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Summer 1405

By summer this verse becomes less alarm clock and more audit. You heard the voice at dawn in spring — the cup was offered, the invitation was clear. Did you fill it? The voice in the tavern does not shout. It cries — which is somewhere between calling out and weeping. There is grief built into the invitation. The liquor is drying even as it is offered. This is not cruelty but physics: everything offered in time is also being withdrawn by time.

Fill the cup in summer by doing the thing you have been almost doing since Farvardin. Not eventually. Now. The left hand of dawn is always somewhere above the horizon. The voice is always in the tavern. You are always, always half-dreaming.
