9 Mehr 1405

Quatrain 38 of 75

“One Moment in Annihilation's Waste,

One moment, of the Well of Life to taste—

The Stars are setting, and the Caravan

Starts for the dawn of Nothing—Oh, make haste!”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn 1405

The caravan in autumn has obviously started. The stars set earlier every night; the mornings are visibly darker than they were in Tir. The Well of Life in autumn is still available but the tasting is more knowing — you have tasted before, you know what it is, the sweetness is familiar and more dear for being familiar. Annihilation's Waste — the desert at the end of the caravan's journey — is visible on the horizon in Mehr and Aban.

Make haste — in autumn this has the quality of a late harvest, the careful urgent work of gathering what the season has produced before the frost comes. The tasting is more deliberate. The well is still deep.
