Quatrain 2

Quatrain 2 of 75

“Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky

I heard a Voice within the Tavern cry,

"Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup

Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Spring

The left hand of dawn — that cold gray light before the sun has cleared the horizon, when the sky is not yet day and no longer night. Khayyam is caught dreaming in this threshold moment, and what reaches him from the tavern is not a philosophy. It is a voice. Urgent. Maternal, almost. My little ones.

In spring this voice sounds like the season itself: come out. The cold is nearly gone. The cup of the year is full and filling. What Khayyam captures with perfect precision is the exact feeling of being called by life while still half-asleep in it. The cup is full now. The liquor is at its height. Fill it — not tomorrow, not once you have gathered enough reason. Before it dries. Before the spring turns to summer turns to autumn and you are still in bed, dreaming of what you meant to do.
