Quatrain 23 of 75

“Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend,

Before we too into the Dust Descend;

Dust into Dust, and under Dust, to lie,

Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer and—sans End!”

Omar Khayyamtr. Edward FitzGerald, 1859

Reflection · Autumn

Sans wine, sans song, sans singer — and then the devastating final pause before: sans end. This is Khayyam at his most compressed and most honest. Death is not a conclusion. It is a state without ending, not the end of a sentence but the permanent erasure of the capacity to form sentences. Under the dust, forever. Sans end. Make the most of what we yet may spend. The yet is doing everything here — not what we will spend, not what we should spend, but what we yet may.

The dust into dust is not metaphor. It is chemistry: the human body returning to the forms it takes without the organizing principle of life. There is no spiritual consolation being offered. Just the fact, stated with the precision of a mathematician, followed by the single instruction: spend what remains.
